LAST UPDATED: December 10th, 2006
A wet and messy fetish (WAM) is a form of sexual fetishism whereby a
person becomes aroused when substances are deliberately and generously
applied to the naked skin, or to the clothes people are wearing.
Messy substances can include whipped cream, mud, shaving foam, custard,
pudding, chocolate sauce, Japanese-style lotion, oil or gunge/slime,
etc. Wet substances are mainly water but can also include other liquids
such as fruit juice or milk). The interests of WAM fetishists vary
quite widely in terms of preferences for clothed or unclothed WAM, self
or
non-self WAMing, facial or non-facial coverage and the nature of the
substances used.
Description
Wet
This can refer to arousal by the appearance of wet, oil or
lotion-covered skin, or alternatively, the appearance of wet clothing.
There is some relationship between the latter and aquaphilia.
Messy
This refers to the application of largely opaque substances not usually
used in this fashion (such as those listed above). Others prefer the
substances to be translucent, such as syrup, Japanese-style lotion, or
gunge. A major subdivision of food play involves striking people
with custard pies, much like in silent comedy films. Messy
Wrestling in substances such as mud, oil, lotion or gelatine also falls
under this category.
Again there is a distinction between those who enjoy the sight of messy
substances on bare skin, and those who prefer messy clothing.
In addition, some enjoy the experience of getting messy by themselves
("self-WAMing").
What WAM does not include
Bodily fluids such as feces, urine, semen and female ejaculate are not
considered part of WAM. The former two are typically considered
coprophilia and urophilia; the latter being somewhat mainstream in
pornography. (see cumshot and bukkake).
Psychology behind WAM
Humiliation
It has generally been agreed [1] that WAM is not generally about
humiliation. When humiliation is is a factor it is usually in the
form of "dehumanising" the unwilling victim by making them
unrecognisable or ruining their clothing.
Sensuality
The physical experience of contact with messy substances or the sight
of someone else enjoying or sharing this experience is arguably the
most "mainstream" form of WAM fetishism. In contrast to the
humiliation form of WAM, this form emphasises the pleasure of the
participant(s).
Childhood fantasies
People may wish to act out (or have others act out) childhood fantasies
such as messing up smart clothes or participating in food fights.
Recent WAM history
Part of the current awareness of wet and messy fetishism is due to the British fetish magazine Splosh!,
which began in 1989. This magazine featured pictures of, and stories
about, women in wet and messy situations, although its production has
recently slowed. This has led to the word "sploshing" being
used as a kind of shorthand, especially in mainstream
media, for the fetish. The advent of popular access to the Internet has
led to the creation of websites and forums that allow professional WAM
producers to showcase their material and for amateurs to exchange
photos.
